THE WORK

Writing & background

Originally from Washington State, Theo has called Taiwan home for more than five years. Living abroad and traveling have exposed him to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of looking at the world, and that sense of exploration has become part of his writing.

Characters are his favorite part of writing. He likes exploring what people do when they’re pushed, how they justify their choices, and how two people can look at the same situation and come away with completely different answers.

INFLUENCES

Creative influences

A lot of Theo’s ideas come from stories he loves taking apart to see why they work, mixed with things he picks up while traveling.

These are a few of the influences that have stuck with him.

Star Wars

The sense that a story can feel enormous without losing sight of the people inside it.

Hunter × Hunter

Probably the biggest culprit behind Theo’s obsession with power systems.

Brandon Sanderson

One of the writers who pushed Theo further down the power-system rabbit hole.

Travel

Different cultures and perspectives have given Theo plenty to steal from reality.

OFF THE PAGE

Beyond the page

When he’s not writing, Theo collects overpriced LEGO sets, loses unreasonable amounts of time to unsolved puzzles, and maintains strong opinions about peanut butter. He’s also usually reading, wandering somewhere unfamiliar, or noticing some small detail that may eventually end up in a fictional world.
